The Small Cyclades island of Donoussa is rugged, tranquil, and striking. The rocky hills are a dramatic contrast to the deep blue and turquoise of the Aegean Sea. Add in the traditional white buildings against the clear blue sky,and you have a vista that makes Donoussa island feel like a magical dream.
Donoussa island has only 200 something inhabitants. You find yourself interacting as much with the resident cats and wild goats as with people. This island inspires you to slow down, take in the breathtaking view and just be. There are reasons to stir yourself, however, such as a delicious meal or a pristine beach. But bring your hiking shoes–with the exception of the beach in the main village of Stavros, you have to work for your reward. Kedros Beach requires only a walk down a fairly steep stone stairway, while Kalotaritissa Beach takes over 2 hours on foot. Luckily there is a bus to assist and also a water taxi during the high season.
There are a handful of tavernas on Donoussa island serving traditional Greek dishes. There’s also lots of seafood, much of it caught that same day. My favorite meal was at Iliovasilema where the owner invited me into the kitchen to choose my fresh pargo (snapper). If you travel in the late shoulder season of September October, there are fewer tavernas open with fewer choices. It’s a good idea to check this out before you climb through the steep alleys of Stavros only to find that your desired restaurant is only serving goat and potatoes! (True story!)
I spent 5 nights on Donoussa island and left wishing I had at least 5 more. I LOVED my lazy mornings on my patio listening to the roosters greet the day. Each day I logged hundreds of steps up and down hills to reach my chosen beach destination. On some hikes it was just me, the rocks, and the Aegean. Except, of course, for the goats. Always the goats!
