In 2024, I made my second trip to the Galapagos Islands. If you love wildlife and the sea, these islands need to be on your “must visit” list. Contrary to what many people believe, you don’t have to take a cruise and you don’t have to be part of an organized tour. AND you can do it affordably! Be on the lookout for my upcoming comprehensive write-up of this destination.
For now, I want to share the most magical thing that happened in my 10 days on the islands. One of the things I love most about these islands are the sea lions. They are everywhere. On the beaches, on the park benches, passed out in the gutters, or even on the chairs of the sidewalk cafes. Nature is king in the Galapagos, so you keep 6 feet between you and any wildlife. If there is one passed out on the street, you walk around it. Sometimes, however, the babies are curious and if you are lucky, you may share a magical moment.
There is a lagoon on the island of Isabela called Concha de Perla where you can snorkel on your own. I visited every day and saw iguanas, Galapagos Crabs, rays, turtles, sharks, and many sea lions–or “Lobos Marinos” (Sea Wolves)as the locals call them. Once you have experienced one of the aggressive bulls (males) barking at you protecting his territory, you’ll agree the name makes sense! I was ending my snorkel on the day of my departure when the curious guy you see in the video swam up to me. For a couple of minutes I shared a moment with this baby sea lion as he frolicked and somersaulted around me. He or she was so curious! I’m not sure if it wanted to play or was just wondering what sort of weird creature I was, but it was incredible. At one point, he actually swam right up and booped my mask! He swam off eventually, but it was a moment I will never forget.
This is why I travel. For breathtaking moments when you stop and look around you in wonder and cherish the place, the moment, and the experience ♥
In all things of nature there is something of the marvelous.
