Lovely Praia da Luz in the Algarve

I just returned from a visit to the stunning Algarve region in the south of Portugal. Praia da Luz was definitely one of the highlights! This beautiful Atlantic Ocean beach is bordered by dramatic cliffs, and has waves just the right size to create the crashing ocean sound that wipes everything else from your mind.

The beach is large enough that it didn’t feel crowded and the sand is soft with very few shells or rocks on land or in the water. The climate and the water temperature in the Algarve are similar to the Mediterranean. So lying on the beach you will be really hot. Diving into the water feels like a cold plunge–brrrr!!! You do acclimate to it, but it never loses that slightly chilly edge.

I suggest enjoying it by first running to the edge of the water, barking hysterically at the waves, jumping in to play, then rolling in the sand before running the length of the beach. At least that’s how the local dog enjoyed it! Alternately, you can just wade in before relaxing with a book on your towel, or rent palapas and chairs for 20 euro. Whatever–you do you!

If you are intersted in water sports, you can jet ski, kayak, paddleboard, or even get your own paddle car with built in slide!? After that, take a walk on the Praia da Luz boardwalk to sit down for a meal or just get uma cerveja ou um gelado.

Our apartment was less than 5 minutes from the beach and had a really nice view of the water and the cliffs. Watching the sunset with wine and tapas on the terrace was a wonderful end to each day. This was my first trip to the Algarve and I definitely will return to Praia da Luz! Obrigada for reading and please drop any questions or comments below.

Continue a persequir! (Chase on)
